Researcher Profile

DC9: Multi-objective path planning

Marco Capitanelli is a mechatronics and robotics engineer whose work centres on autonomous mobile robots, spanning space, field, and industrial applications. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and then his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Mechatronics and Robotics, at the Politecnico di Bari. His Master’s thesis, “Path Planning using Reinforcement Learning Policies with Time Constraints for Lunar Rovers Exploration,” was developed during an internship in the European Space Agency Automation and Robotics Section in Noordwijk, where he built a reinforcement-learning approach for autonomous path planning of lunar rovers in permanently shadowed regions, validating it both in simulation and on a physical rover. Before his time at ESA, he was a research engineer at the Robotic Mobility Lab in Bari, where he worked on all-terrain agricultural robots, including the modal analysis of a tracked robot’s suspension system using accelerometer measurements. After graduating, he joined Mirai Robotics as a robotic hardware engineer, taking part in the integration and field validation of a robotic platform for autonomous marine applications. His research interests are in robotics, with a focus on robot mechanics and dynamics, vibration mechanics, autonomous navigation, and artificial intelligence for robotics. As the DC9 fellow in the SureROB MSCA Doctoral Network, hosted at TU Darmstadt with ABB as industrial partner, he pursues his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Debora Clever and Dr. Mikael Norrlöf.
